Turtles of the World
When we think of prehistoric animals, turtles aren’t usually the first to come to mind. Still, turtles have been on this planet since the Triassic period and there are over 200 species still living on Earth today. These hardy survivors have adapted to life on every continent except Antarctica; they live in deserts, tropics, temperate habitats and even the oceans! Here at OdySea Aquarium we currently house 12 different species of freshwater turtle, including representatives from North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Indonesia. We have animals from the tropics and from temperate habitats, animals that eat animal protein only (carnivores) and animals that eat vegetation and animal protein (omnivores). We have animals that swim through the water actively, animals that crawl along the bottom and even animals that can hibernate under the ice of frozen ponds.
